The Apennine peninsula or Italian peninsula is the peninsula spanning from the Alps in the north to the central Mediterranean Sea in the South. The peninsula is bordered by the Adriatic Sea on the east, the Ionian Sea on the south, and the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Seas on the west.

Nearly all of the Apennine peninsula is a part of the state of Italy, except for the small states of San Marino and the Vatican. The peninsula has a typical boot-like shape, because of which it is also known as Lo Stivale (Italian for "The Boot").
