Sherry is a fortified wine. Fortified wines like sherry, port and madeiraare those to which alcohol has been added at some point, producing a sweeter, blended wine product. Although the word "sherry" is used in a generic or semi-generic manner in some countries, such as the United States and Australia, modern sherry was originally from Jerez, Spain, and under the laws of Spain and some other European jurisdictions, only wine from this region may properly be called "sherry".
